Oil Pulling

I have been meaning to (and even worse, promising to) write this blog for ages, I’m sorry! I started experimenting with oil pulling back in October and have mentioned it on facebook and a lot of people have asked about it so wanted to get my experience out there for anyone else who is curious.

After initially hearing about it from a social media source I now forget, I did some research. Most sites reiterate what is covered on oilpulling.com regarding the process and the touted benefits – there are also a few demo videos out there that are worth watching if only for a laugh. I also found some articles that said it was a load of crap, so I did what I thought was the only thing to do, and tried it for myself!

In short, the premise is that swilling unrefined, cold-pressed oil (preferably sunflower or sesame) around in your mouth extracts toxins from your system through the thin membrane of the mouth, resulting in everything from improved dental hygiene and whiter teeth,  to clearer, softer skin to the elimination of “migraine headaches, bronchitis, diseased teeth, arterio thrombosis, chronic blood disorders such as leukemia, arthritis and related illnesses, neuro physiological paralysis, eczema, gastro enteritis, peritonitis, heart disease, kidney disease, meningitis, and womens hormonal disorders”…

Now I’m not sure about any of that last part as I don’t have any of those conditions, although the site does have a lot of testimonials, but I can say my teeth felt whiter and cleaner, I was a lot less congested (which tends to happen to A blood types in the morning), and my skin softer – particularly my elbows! I don’t need to moisturize them when I’m oil pulling regularly!

To work it into my morning routine of lemon water and vegetable juice, I pushed these things back a little. Instead of doing the lemon water first thing in the morning I do the oil pulling – 1 tbls oil swilled around the mouth for 15-20 minutes. I do it while I’m in the shower and then spit it out while still in there so I can rinse my mouth with warm water to get rid of all the residue (saves boiling the kettle). Then I do my lemon water and get ready for work, then have my juice before I brush my teeth and leave the house.

It seems to be doing more good than harm so I’m going to keep it up. Would love to hear from anyone else who has tried it!!

  1. I have friends who have done this with great results in regards to their teeth and I tried it for the first time this morning. It is rough but I did it while I wasn’t doing anything else. I think doing it in the shower is a great idea!

  5. Hi! I just find your blog and i love it! I know its a little bit late my coment, but i wanna to ask if it can be at night the pulling? i dont know if you know the difference between do it at morning or night. Thanks anyway, sorry my english, im from Argentina!

    • Hi Ines – it’s never too late for questions! Ayurvedic practice says to do your oil pulling in the morning as it helps remove the accumulation of bacteria that builds up during the night. I haven’t read about any side-effects of doing it at night but believe it’s not optimal.
